One of the things my doc and I decided to do in order to try and conquer my migraines is alter my hormones. I used to be on Depo-provera and never ever ever had a migraine, let alone a headache very often. I used to tell people I was amazed that I never got headaches.
Late 2004, I switched to Depo-Provera Lo, a lower amount of the same stuff and started experiencing chronic daily headache. I never made the connection. I also came off Zoloft around this time. When I finally stopped Depo Provera all together and started having my period again, I experienced my first full blown migraine.
At one point I had an IUD put in. Yesterday I had it removed. I was nervous, having it put in was not the most pleasant experience and I was worried taking it out would be worse. It was easier then expected. There was some cramping and I certainly didn't want to run a marathon afterwards, but I was surprised by how uneventful the whole thing was. My doctor made me feel very comfortable.
I also got my first shot of Depo-Provera. I know it takes a while for hormones to adjust and everything to get back to where it was. I am still on 150 mgs of Topamax and 50mgs of Zoloft a day. I am trying to get my cocktail of meds just right. I am also trying to keep a journal this time.
I will say that the scalp burning has been reduced already. I have had more breaks in pain throughout the day today and last night then with any other medication/treatment. I am holding out a lot of hope. I am also trying to remember it takes time for hormones to adjust and for my body to stop cycling. I sure hope this is the answer. I keep my fingers crossed. No matter what, I am glad to be done with the IUD. It was not the best method for me. I am grateful for the relief I have received from the Topamax despite its side effects. I feel like I might be adjusting to it finally.
One day at a time. One day at a time.

I am on topamax also and it has given me my life back. I was getting migraines everyday all day long. My first dose of topamax I finally achieved some clarity in my head...the side effects did go away for me. I was considering an IUD also...but maybe not after reading this. thanks for yr blog.
I had been on topamax for a couple of years and started to see that I was being affected by side effects. These side effects being dizziness, memory loss, etc. I truly loved topamax as I was not affect with migraines a lot from taking the medication. But if I went like 3 days without it a migraine was soon to come. But recently I remembered that I when I was younger and on Depo I went for years without migraines. And once I was pregnant and was off they came back. I hadn't been on Depo for years. So I decided to try it again. And I've been on it for about 3 months and not one migraine and no topamax. I happy I remembered this solution. It may not work for everybody but it definitely working for me and I couldn't be happier. Man, cause migraine hurt like hell for me.
My name is Janet Smith and i would like to show you my personal experience with Depo-Provera.
I am 38 years old. I have been taking Depo-Provera for 8 years. This drug may not be the answer for everyone but for me without it my life is not pleasant. Bleeding in my shoes for days each month, terrible to the floor cramping and pain. First shot, period gone, have gone off it, takes months for it to come back but when it does it is just as bad. My mood changes when I am due to have my shot, I can feel it happening, and I will admit that I depend on it to keep me more level. I can feel the PMS when my 12 weeks is up, during the 12 weeks I have no side effects. My mom has some bone density issues and my doctor has suggested that perhaps I go off, not going to happen, it is monthly miracle, and although I understand the effects are different for everyone I say sometimes to have a more normal cycle you need to not have one.
I have experienced some of these side effects-
possibly weight gain, had been gaining weight before, mood swings when I need to get my shot, none that I get complaints about when I am on it, decreased sex drive
I hope this information will be useful to others,
